If you sleep 8 hours on average, as recommended, you’ll spend close to third of your life in a bed. People usually don’t pay attention to the mattress they use , until they calculate the number of sleepless nights.

Comfort, support and persistence are the most important aspects a mattress should provide you with. Since sleep is a vital component of your health and happiness, having a quality mattress that suits your needs should be high on your list of priorities.

When buying a new mattress, it’s important to get the best quality for your money. However, this entire edeavor can be quite expensive, time consuming and confusing. Here are a few tips on how to purchase the right mattress at a reasonable price.

Salesman’s job is to sell
There are a lot of different considerations when it comes to the mattress shopping. It is important that you do your research before you find yourself face to face with a salesman. There is always the tech talk; open-sprung, pocket-sprung, viscoelastic memory foam etc. Don’t let the salesmen confuse you with these facts, as they will probably try. Then, there is the price talk. “You won't get such a quality mattress at this low price anywhere else,” is probably the sentence you will hear in almost every store. However, the chances are you will.

Salesman usually work on commission so, in order to boost their earnings, they will always try to sell something extra to you. Whether it is a mattress pad, a nice mattress cover or maybe a pillow – remember that’s not what you really need. For example, you’ll probably put sheets on your mattress, so it’s not so important that the lining is cashmere or silk, you won’t feel it. Being well informed and knowing what you want is the most important thing that will prevent you from getting ripped off.

In many stores, it’s not unusual to negotiate for the price of a mattress. That means that they are overpriced, so don’t hesitate to get it down to a reasonable price. But, be careful – you're up against a professional. Therefore, if you haven't done your research properly, you could end up being flooded with special deals and discounts that may cost you even more than the initial price.

Buy online
You can avoid a salesman-trap if you’re purchasing online. Buying your mattresses online enables you to browse dozens of brands quickly. Most importantly, online offers usually include a variety of discounts which can significantly save your money. Since you don’t have the opportunity to try out the mattress, make sure that the company has a free return policy. The trial period should be at least 30 days. Any different option should be a deal-breaker, no matter what else is included in the offer. Also, many companies offer to take your old mattress away, which can be very helpful. Tip: If you’ll feel safer, choose a good mattress in person, and then find the same or a similar model online in order to spend less.

How much you should spent on a mattress?
It’s hard to put a price tag on a good night sleep, but paying more than you need is no fun either. Usually, the middle ground is a good way to go. In other words, staying under the $1000 mark should probably be your goal. Spending more than that, in most cases, will bring you no extra benefit and you’ll be probably paying for a brand name and some extra options you don’t even need.

Remember, it’s your sleep, your mattress, your back, and your money, so the time and the effort spent on the research is well worth it. You’ll end up with a better quality mattress at a more reasonable price.
