Plan Your Grocery Shopping Around Your Lifestyle

by Colleen P Moyne (Colmo) (follow)
I'm a freelance writer living in the beautiful river town of Mannum in SA, dreaming of the day I can retire from the 9-5 to write full time.

Do you write a different shopping list every time you go grocery shopping or do you always buy the same things in the same amounts for the same old meals every time?

Did you know that, by taking a few extra minutes to plan your purchases around your family activities, you can save yourself some money?

For example, if you shop for groceries on a Friday, do you consider what your plans are for the weekend? Will all members of the family be home? Will you be going out for dinner? Will you be having friends over?

If your family is anything like mine was when my children were teenagers, there were times when I wouldn't see them for the whole weekend. This meant that I could plan for less family meals and save dollars in the process. If I knew they would be having friends over, I’d perhaps buy some pizza bases and a few toppings so that I could feed them all cheaply.

If the weather is cold I might plan ingredients for casseroles or stews. If it's going to be particularly warm, I buy salad vegetables and perhaps extra fruit juice to make icy poles - anything to save making hasty (and expensive) last-minute purchases at the local general store.

If I'm going to be working all week I might buy quick and easy lunch items, but if I'll be at home and have some extra preparation time, it's more economical for me to buy some cheap seasonal vegetables and make soup.

A little forethought and planning can not only save you money at the checkout, but it will also save wastage at home. Take a few minutes to check the family’s schedule next time you’re writing your grocery list.
