There are so many thrifty meal ideas and recipes out there, that feeding a large family will no longer need to break the budget. From ordering cheap pizza takeaway, to utilising in season produce and cooking at home, you can easily feed the whole family for a very small cost! Making small changes when grocery shopping and ordering out can really make a big difference in the long run.
Rolled Oats Oats are a perfect winter breakfast warmer and are great for large families! Plus, oats can be super affordable and last in the cupboard for a long time. Rather than buying fancy, prepackaged quick oats in small packets for more than $5, you might like to consider buying a huge 1kg bag of rolled oats for less than half the price. They may take an extra 30 seconds in the microwave but for the huge cost saving, it’s surely worth it.
Pizza Takeaway There are so many cheap pizza options and family friendly deals available online today. You can spend less than $30 and feed a large and hungry family. My personal favourite is pepperoni or cheese pizza from the Domino’s $5 pizza menu. You can order 6 pizzas for just $30! Pizza Hut also offer a similar deal, you can grab yourself a medium pizza and drink for under $10. The only downside is that you will need to pick up the pizzas yourself, but it’s certainly worth it for the money saved!
Tomato Spaghetti This recipe is one that almost any household could make without heading the shops. All you’ll need is a packet or two of spaghetti, olive oil and a tin of tomatoes or fresh tomatoes. Cook the pasta, combine the olive oil and tomatoes together and stir through the pasta to coat it in that delicious sauce. This recipe is great because it’s easy and can also be made in large quantities to feed a lot of people or have leftovers for future dinners.
Lasagna Another great meal which can be made in large quantities is lasagna! Fill it with lots of veggies and meat to create a wholesome and filling meal. Or for an alternative option, you could replace the meat with grated mushroom for a vegetarian option. You might like to make up 2 separate dishes and place one in the freezer to be saved for another time. Or you might like to have it for dinner and lunch the next day. I’m sure nobody will mind having it 2 days in a row!

Chicken Stir Fry Another great meal which can double up as dinner and lunch is a tasty chicken stir-fry. All you’ll need is chicken, lots of veggies, soy sauce, honey and rice to serve. Most of these ingredients you should already have in the pantry or freezer, which is why this meal is one of my favourites when feeding the family in a hurry. It takes less than 15 minutes to prepare and around 15 minutes to cook, making it the perfect dish to cook when time is limited.
Toasted Sandwiches Everybody loves toasted sandwiches, you can’t go wrong with them! They can be made as simple or gourmet as you like and are perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Grab some bread from the freezer, can be plain white or wholemeal, cheese and tomato to make a simple vegetarian option. Or to make things a little more interesting you could add some ham, avocado and other salads to mix things up. Either way, this is another meal where you should have most of the ingredients on hand to easily prepare in under 5 minutes.
