When summer is just around the corner, it's fun to think about how to spend time with the kids in the outdoors. Of course, you want them to be happy and healthy while enjoying time socializing with their mates. You don't want them to have too much time to sit at home using electronics or zoning out in front of the telly. You can help them reap the numerous benefits of outdoor play, and these activities don't have to break the bank.

If your family is lucky enough to live near a local park, then you obviously have access to playground equipment. It's easy to stop at the park and take advantage of this amenity any time. Make the fun last longer by packing snacks and drinks for the kids in a little lunch tote. Here, we look at 5 other fun things to do for free so you and your kids can rock this summer down under!

1. Have a campout in the backyard. While not every residence is conducive to camping, many are. If your house isn't the ideal place, your kids can schedule this activity with neighbors or friends who do. Remember to plan this activity for a time when you or another adult can provide adequate supervision and you are reasonably assured there will be favorable weather. All you need are jammies, sleeping bags, snacks, books, a flashlight, and some cool bedtime stories! You might even get a chance to scare the kids when they least expect it! Just be prepared the kids might be tired the next day.

2. Take a bicycle ride through a different part of your community. Some spots within driving distance of your home are great for bike rides with oldies and younger ones. When it comes to bikes, it's easy to stop for a few minutes, park them, and explore sights on foot. You might need to bring bottles of water and pack sandwiches for lunch.

3. Attend a free show. The community offers different kinds of shows that local organizations are putting on just for kids. This includes everything from puppet shows and craft days to meeting community partners (emergency services, police, and fire) and performing arts events.

4. Give back to the community by volunteering to clean up litter. Things to do with kids for free can also be educational and service-oriented. While some scheduled activities for cleaning up the environment may not be kid-friendly, there might be a good day to bring plastic trash bags and rubber gloves and have the kiddos clean up litter at the nearby playground. Kids get many benefits from being active in the outdoors, not just playing on playground equipment, but also walking and running and breathing in fresh air.

5. Hit the beach. The seaside is a great place for kids to run on a different kind of ground, which is often uneven, and discover the sights, smells, and textures of the coast. From building sandcastles to finding shells, from swimming to playing beach volleyball, the kids get to play all day. They come home a little sunburnt and all of their energies are spent, but they are content and have new summer memories to cherish.

Little ones love to play in the outdoors, and they never think much about the cost, or how smart parents like you just got them to do fun free things to do with kids.
